Join us as we delve into each item, exploring its significance and the role it plays in the life of a modern man.”
So without further delay here is the list:

I have made a quick reference guide and a downloadable version with check boxes, which includes some bonus items beyond 30, if you are an achiever.
The breakdown
- A sense of humor. This is honestly a subject that I could write a whole article about, so let me just some it up quickly for the sake of moving to the next item by saying, “A sense of humor is vital for men as it fosters resilience, strengthens social connections, and enables them to navigate life’s challenges with grace and perspective.”
- A sport that you love and are good at. Again, this is one of those topics which could be further explained so I’ll some it up as this, “For a man, having a sport they love and excel at not only provides physical health benefits but also cultivates discipline, camaraderie, and a sense of accomplishment.”
- Tweezers. There are many reasons to have not just any tweezers, but nice ones. They can come in handy for things such as splinter removal but most commonly I would suggest to use them to pluck those hairs gentlemen. Check out these
- A Signature Cologne. Having a good cologne is pretty important. If you don’t have one yet I suggest trying out a sampler pack and ordering some from this list. You can then experiment with a few and find that signature scent. Now that being said, I like to expand that collection to at least a winter and summer, and business and pleasure. At minimum I want about 4 colognes. Oh, and here’s a tip DO NOT ask a random guy or friend what they wear if you find their scent is nice. They wont tell and you will look like a fool.
- A well cut Black Suit. Okay, I know Tom Ford said a “Dark Suit”. I suggest a black suit, if you are a guy that rarely wears suits. At least you will have weddings, funerals, and interviews covered. I personally don’t care for a blue suit ever unless it is a special design that will stand out. I prefer black, then charcoal and silver. From there you are able to expand. I always suggest getting it tailored. You can check out more on suits here. Looking for a travel/active suit, check out this brand.
- A pair of classic black, laced dress shoes. Now if having a suit is on the list obviously a pair of nice black shoes is part if the outfit and don’t for get that it is also important to have a matching belt. Oxfords are my go to, and of course we are talking good quality leather. Check out these shoes and belts. I also suggest if you go for a charcoal or grey/silver suit to also have a brown pair as well. A tip* also match watch bands.
- A smart blazer. Did you know a blazer is generally different then a suit jacket? Well if not, now you do. Having a nice blazer or better yet a few will elevate your look to the next level. There are a lot of options out there, just make sure it’s tailored. Check out this guide to blazers.
- The perfect pair of dark and light denim jeans. Tom Ford recommends a nice dark pair, but I’m going a step further. We all have those everyday wears like to the grocery store or hardware store. Wear the jeans and t-shirt look NOT joggers or leisure wear, don’t look sloppy in public. Making sure you find the right jeans is essential. Not too big or tight (unless you can pull it off), and stay away from trendy. Yes the dark jean and white tee is a good look, but in my opinion, so is the light jean and black shirt. Check out this jean guide. Which brings me to the next one.
- Lots of nice white and black t-shirts. Just as I mentioned above the black shirt is just as important as the white shirt in my opinion. Just make sure you find some good tees that are cotton, thick, and well made. Don’t just grab that cheep bag of thin tees from the local big box store. Check out these.
- Always new socks and underwear. You should be throwing away your old, worn out, stretched, stained socks and underwear every 6 months and getting new ones, stop waiting for Christmas guys! In fact, take them off the list and get quality that suits your fashion. For socks you need dress, athletic, and cold weather. For underwear let’s toss out boxers and briefs (unless you can pull it off). Let us stick with boxer briefs.
- A classic tuxedo. I know that this may not apply to everyone. Humor me. Once and a while you may attend an event that calls for one (black tie). If you have time, sure you could rent one, but if you rent 1-3 times you could have had your own. Then you are set. Let me address the “I don’t go to those events” guy. Ask yourself this… “Should I go?”. Do you have a lady (or guy) in your life that you like to impress? Take her/him out. Take some dance lessons on the side before hand. Step up your game. Now, get that tux, **hint** a lot of wedding rental businesses are closing and liquidating, check the marketplace and see if there are any deals (know your size). And don’t forget the accessories (you wont find them last minute, cheap at least)!
- A beautiful day watch with a metal band. There are so many watches out there. The one that fits most occasions will have a metal band, more in this watch guide. Does this mean you need a Rolex? No, of course not. You can start cheep, join a club if you like having a lot of options or yes, a smart watch. You can change faces and bands for all occasions with smart watches. I suggest that option for men today, but I do like to have a nice investment time piece as well.
- The perfect sunglasses. You should find a pair of sunglasses that are not flashy and fit your face, check out this glasses guide. If you can afford it and it ties in with your hobby, sure you can have some flashy ones, but 1st get that perfect pair. This also goes for eye glasses. No trendy designs, just classic.
- Perfect teeth. Yes this is essential! If you don’t have them save up and get them fixed. By fixed this could mean braces, cosmetic dentistry, or a full Hollywood replacement. You do have a temp solution if you have to save up. It’s not ideal but may get you by. Your teeth (smile) play a big part in how people perceive you.
- Daily read of the news. I don’t mean like your grandpa. Those days of the inky paper being delivered by the local teen are over. Get the apps and subscribe to those that are relevant to you. This coud very greatly depending on you, so you’ll need to figure this one out. I do suggest having a reading tablet though (more on that later in the bonus round).
- A leather wallet. Well, you need a wallet. A nice low profile black leather wallet will do great. Try to minimize the stuff you keep in it. Sure you can match your wallet with your shoes and belt, but it can be daunting. Black will do. Do I recommend the hard “military grade ones”? No. 1st of all, if you have been in the military you should know that it means that the item is overpriced and under preforms. If you really want to streamline things, get the cell case that has a small wallet incorporated. Does anyone still use a money clip?
- A wet shaving kit and or beard and mustache trimmers. This falls under hygiene products. I feel like this is a no brainer. Choose a nice shave kit even if you have a beard. You should line up the neck and cheeks for a clean look. If you have a beard or mustache, get the trimmer and scissors with associated products to keep a clean look.
- Toiletry Bag. I am speaking about an actual bag to keep your products in for safe storage in your bathroom, and for easy organized travel. Get a nice leather toiletry bag. Also make sure you have all the hygiene products to match your vibe/style.
- Running Shoes. You should have a pair of running shoes for staying fit. These are not for everyday wear. You jog with these, maybe workout in general (you could get separate shoes for this too). Staying fit is part of being healthy, and some good running shoes are worth the investment in yourself.
- A quality grill. Even if you are not a great chef you can still stride to be a great bbq king. So having a great quality grill is key to having a successful cook out. If you want to take it up a level check out this smoker! I have one, it rocks! Smoking meat is a hobby of mine, but you still need a grill.
- A water bottle. If you are one of those that use plastic disposable water bottles, STOP! It’s time to think of the planet here. Drink water, a lot! It’s important for your health. Do it using one of these.
- Whiskey bottle and glass collection. I don’t condone alcoholism. Assuming you don’t have a problem I suggest you start building a nice whiskey, bourbon, and scotch selection consisting of some casual sippers that are less expensive to some top shelf celebrators. A choice glass collection coincides with these drinks. There are whole blogs and books based off this information so I’ll give you a quick guide to help you start. It also helps to have some of the essential accessories.
- Espresso/Coffee Maker. If you insist on having a simple drip coffee maker fine just choose a nice one or think about a french press. If you want a quick, easy, and affordable but nicer then a drip option get one of these. The best option is definitely an espresso machine, but you may need to practice a bit. It’s okay, it will impress her/him and honestly it is delicious when done right. Yes you could just go get a latte from a coffee shop, and you should from time to time to socialize/network/work. You should have a home option though and why settle for drip?
- A Cast iron skillet. These are useful for home cooking and camping. Cast iron skillets last forever as long as you care for them.
- A nice wool blanket. This is one of those essential items to keep you warm at home in bed or on the couch, camping, or as an emergency blanket. There are thick scratchy ones and nice soft ones make sure you pick wisely!
- Coasters. Yes guys, we need to protect our countertops and furniture. Coasters are how we do that. Get a nice set that speaks to your style.
- A book collection. In modern day we have the option and luxury of having ebooks and reading tablets. I suggest using this tec to your advantage, but you should have a few choice books for a boutique home library at least. Personally I collect special books. I will check out a book from the library or read/listen to the ebook. If it fits the bill for my personal collection I find one bound in leather or signed. Did you know you can have any book leather bound? Check out this Etsy link. If you are looking for somewhere to start, here is a list of books you can check out! Nothing says sexy like smart, and smart people read books.
- A nice laptop. We all need a computer in this world today. Some of you may have a desktop but not a laptop. Laptops offer a level of freedom that a desktop wont. Just make sure it’s got power and space like this one. I personally like the Macbook Pro. You can then joint the eco system of the Ipad, Iphone, Iwatch, and more. Yes they are more, and they are worth it! The design is simply sexy, not clunky like those others. If you choose the Macbook, you may need one or more of these accessories.
- Nice travel bags. Speaking of having a nice travel laptop, you should have a case to protect it in and carry your accessories. I am talking about a computer bag, not a backpack. If you must have a backpack then make an elegant choice. You may also want to consider having some nice weekend bags for vacations or business trips, and a nice gym bag if you go to the gym.
- Some good basic tools. As a man you should be able to preform some basic home and or vehicle maintenance tasks. I’m not saying you need a full contractor set or mechanics set. But things like a hammer, drill, drivers, socket set, monkey wrench, vice grips, and more. You get the picture. Here is a list I’ve composed to better assist you.
The Bonus round
Okay so there is the list of 30 essentials for men broken down, but wait there’s more! I decided that 30 wasn’t quite enough. So I am adding a few bonus items to help you out.
- A blender or immersion blender. A blender is a great item to assist you with your diet and health.
- A nice cell phone. It goes without saying we pretty much need a cell phone. If you have a cracked or outdated phone maybe it’s time to upgrade, and take care of this one. Make sure to consider the eco systems of your devices.
- A Reading tablet. This is different than an Ipad. These tablets are designed for reading, writing, note taking, schedules and more as it applies to productivity and not so geared towards entertainment. But it is nice to have an Ipad for entertainment should you need it. Also check out this all new Vision Pro by Apple as a double bonus!
- Plenty of pictures and art on your walls. It is important to surround yourself with things and people that you love. Print out some of the pictures of you and your friends and family and put them in frames on the wall. Buy some art and display it paintings or sculptures! You can also incorporate digital picture frames and art as well!
- Plants. Plants are sexy and healthy. If you are not a green thumb as a friend or the local nursery for help with this. Make sure you plant them in nice pots that fit your style! Check out this quick guide!
- A nice wardrobe. This includes slacks, button downs, polos, sweaters, and more. Make sure you also have the right accessories to care for your wardrobe. Check out this quick guide.
- A nice evening watch with a leather band. It’s always nice to have a beautiful evening /dinner watch for finer occasions. These have a leather band and again it should match with your shoes and belt. Now if you have a smart watch you can easily change that watch face and swap the bands.
- Educational subscriptions. These can range vastly dependent upon your nature. It is important to keep educating yourself and obtain additional certificates if needed or helpful. Here is a list of a few that I recommend.
- Work out gear. I mentioned running shoes earlier assuming you have some gear. In case you don’t have gear or need some suggestive help I have a few to give you like clothing choice, equipment, and accessories. All of these assist your efforts in reaching your physical health goals. Here is a list I have put together for gear.
- Meditation gear. It has been a hurdle in the past for men to admit they need some mental health assistance. Not any more. The modern man addresses his mental health and meditation is part of that. To get into a comfortable meditative space you can wear meditation clothing, have a mat, and have accessories that assist in this process. Here is a quick guide to help you gather those essentials and more.
- Backup gifts. Have you ever been in a position where you forgot an important event like an anniversary or birthday? Did you get invited to a last minute party requiring a gift but had not time to shop. Listen up! The backup gifts are the way to go. Always have a lego set, candle, necklace, whiskey, and more already wrapped ready to go. Thats’ right! never be caught off guard unprepared again…… and you thought I forgot. Check out my cheat sheet here for more ideas for different occasions.
- A nice mode of transportation. I’m not going to talk about Ferrari here. I simply mean, whatever mode you choose whether it is a bicycle, e-bike, scooter, car, truck, or whatever else. Just make sure it is washed and maintained regularly. Of course wear safety gear too, check out some of these stylish safety options.
- Incense or candles. It is always a great idea to have some incense and candles around for a power outage to having a nice smelling place, meditation, and yes, romance.
- A nice camera. I know you have a cell phone with a camera in it, and it works well. It is not like a professional camera with all the lens variations available. This is a great hobby to interest yourself in. You could even use it to start a side hustle.
- A nice deck of cards. Having a deck of cards around is a base level of entertainment with friends without electronics. I suggest ordering a few decks and keep a couple for backups. Also Cards of Humanity is insanely fun to play with friends and family(of a mature age).
Summary
Great you made it to the end. Now I know what you may be thinking. Yes you’ll need more than just these items, things such as plates, utensils, furniture, toothpaste and toothbrush. I think we can all assume that these are items that you most likely have. Just take a step back and look at them though when you have a minute. Does your style and elegance shine? My toothbrush and water pick are a nice sleek black along with black counter top bottles I have placed my liquid products in. Does your place look to masculine, bachelor pad, college dorm, or worse trashy? Fix it.
Clearly this is a good starting point for your essential items. Tom Ford only gave you a list of 15, which I’ve included in this list of 30, but why stop short at 15? I thought a few more items could really elevate that list. When your making your decisions on what to purchase specifically keep in mind who you are and what you want to be. An example of this is, if you are living in a big city and working a nice finance job the suit(s) and tuxedo really apply to you vs if you are a rancher in a remote area the suits and tux may not be as crucial, although you should still have at least 1 black suit even as a rancher.
Now if you have made it here as a pioneering early comer to this post you may notice I didn’t set up the links yet. I am in the process of that right now and I will update them as soon as possible. So thanks for hanging in there.
Thank you for reading and like always stay sharp, and stay classy Gentlemen. Cheers until next time!
